How to publish your HTML folder with styles and images intact

  1. Put index.html, CSS and images in one folder

Name your main file index.html and keep your stylesheet, image and script folders next to it. Use relative paths like style.css or images/photo.jpg instead of local C: or /Users/ paths from your computer.

  2. Check file case and folder size

Web servers treat Photo.jpg and photo.jpg as two different files, so match the exact uppercase and lowercase letters in your HTML tags. If your folder has more than roughly 7 MB of files, compress it into a .zip file first so you can use the 25 MB ZIP limit.

  3. Drag the folder or ZIP onto ship.page

Open ship.page in your browser and drop the folder or .zip file onto the uploader. If your ZIP has a single top folder inside it, ship.page unwraps it automatically so index.html sits at the root.

  4. Copy the HTTPS link or download the QR code

Your site goes live in seconds on its own subdomain over HTTPS, and the success screen gives you both the URL and a downloadable PNG QR code. Publish without an account, or claim the page with a free account (no card) to manage it from a dashboard.

Why sending just the HTML file breaks your CSS and images

When you email or chat an index.html file by itself, the person who opens it only gets the text of that one file. Their browser looks for relative paths on their own computer, cannot find your style.css or images folder, and shows unstyled text with broken image icons.

If you Only have one self-contained file with inline styles, turning a single HTML file into a website is enough. As soon as you have separate CSS, JavaScript, fonts or pictures, you need to host a ZIP file or upload the whole folder together so every file sits at the same relative path on the server.

  • Keep paths relative: write href="css/style.css" or src="./img/logo.png" rather than file:///Users/you/Desktop/logo.png.
  • Match exact letter case: src="Hero.PNG" will fail if the file in your folder is named hero.png.
  • Name the entry page index.html: a subpage saved as about.html opens at /about.html, or at /about/ if placed at about/index.html.

Tip: On every plan, a direct folder drop is sent as one request of up to 10 MB with the files encoded inside it (roughly 7 MB of raw files). For larger image folders, zip the folder first to get up to 25 MB on the free plan or 100 MB on Pro.

Which tool should you use to share your HTML site

ship.page is the fastest pick when you want to send a live link to a client, a teacher or a friend right now without creating an account. You drop the folder or use ZIP to website hosting, and anyone with the link can open it immediately with no password wall. Every page sends a noindex header and is kept off public listings, so search engines leave your client draft or personal page alone.

Other hosts fit better when you need a custom domain or huge asset counts. Cloudflare Pages Direct Upload requires a Cloudflare account, but its free plan allows 1,000 files per dashboard drag-and-drop (20,000 via the wrangler CLI) at up to 25 MiB per file and up to 100 custom domains per project on name.pages.dev (note that Cloudflare's docs now suggest starting new projects on Workers). Netlify Drop takes folders and ZIPs (best under 50 MB, with single files over 10 MB prone to getting stuck), though an unclaimed drop sits behind a temporary password and expires on its own unless you sign in. GitHub web upload (Add file, Upload files) takes up to 100 files at a time at 25 MiB per file without Git installed and publishes to username.github.io/repository a few minutes after you turn on GitHub Pages in Settings.

When to claim your page or use Pro ($4/month)

You can use drag and drop website hosting on ship.page without signing in. If you sign in with Google or an email link (no credit card), you can claim the upload to manage it from your dashboard. Free pages cannot be updated in place; uploading a revised folder creates a new link, and free pages display a small "Hosted on ship.page" badge that visitors can close.

If you are sharing work with a client and expect revisions, Pro is $4 a month (monthly billing, cancel anytime). Pro pages don't expire while you're on Pro (or let you pick any expiry from 60 seconds), let you re-upload a folder to update the site while keeping the exact same link, remove the badge, add password protection, and raise limits to a 100 MB ZIP (400 MB unpacked) and 10,000 files. Pro also gives you up to 5 custom subdomains like yourname.ship.place that you can point at any of your pages.

Questions

Why do my images and CSS disappear when I send someone my HTML file?

An HTML file only stores text tags that point to where your CSS and images live. If you send only the .html file, the other person does not have your stylesheets or picture files. Uploading the entire folder or a ZIP to ship.page puts the HTML, CSS and images on the same web server so all relative links keep working.

Should I upload a folder or a ZIP file to ship.page?

Either works. Dragging a folder directly in the browser is great for sites up to roughly 7 MB of files (sent inside one 10 MB request). If your images and fonts total between 7 MB and 25 MB on the free plan (or up to 100 MB on Pro), compress the folder into a .zip file first and drag the ZIP in.

Why do my images work on my computer but break after uploading?

Two things cause this: local file paths and capital letters. Make sure your src and href attributes use relative paths like images/pic.jpg instead of C:/Users/... paths, and check that the spelling and uppercase or lowercase letters match the actual file names exactly, because web servers are case-sensitive.

Can I share a private HTML page, like a Valentine page or client draft, without Google indexing it?

Yes. Every uploaded page on ship.page is served with a noindex header so search engines leave it out, and ship.page does not list uploads anywhere public. Anyone with the link can open it, and on the $4/month Pro plan you can also add a password.

Can I fix a typo in my CSS without changing the link I already sent?

On the free plan, a page cannot be updated in place, so a new upload gets a new link. On the $4/month Pro plan, you can re-upload your folder or ZIP to update the page while keeping the same URL, or point one of up to 5 custom subdomains (like yourname.ship.place) at any page.

Does ship.page work with PHP, Node.js or contact forms?

ship.page hosts static files only: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts, audio, video, WebAssembly and JSON. It does not run PHP, Node.js, Python, databases or WordPress, so if your HTML site has a contact form, connect the form action to a third-party form service.
