Can I upload my own HTML to Google Sites?

Google Sites lets you paste HTML, CSS or JavaScript snippets into a page through Insert, Embed, but it cannot publish an uploaded HTML file or folder as its own site. If you have a finished page, ship.page publishes your .html file (up to 10 MB), .zip (up to 25 MB and 100 files) or folder free forever with no signup, no account and no credit card, giving you a live link in seconds.

How to publish your HTML file or folder without Google Sites

  1. Prepare your HTML file, folder or ZIP

If you have a single page, save it as an .html file up to 10 MB. If you have a multi-page site with CSS, JavaScript and images, make sure the homepage is named index.html and keep the folder or ZIP under 100 files (up to 25 MB zipped on the free plan).

  2. Drop your files into ship.page

Open ship.page in your browser and drag in your .html file, .zip archive or folder, or paste your raw HTML code directly. You do not need an account or credit card.

  3. Share your live HTTPS link or QR code

Your site goes live in seconds on its own subdomain over HTTPS, and the success screen gives you a downloadable PNG QR code. You can publish without an account, or claim the page with a free account (no card) to manage it from a dashboard.

How Google Sites handles custom HTML

Google Sites is a visual page builder, not a file host. You can add custom HTML, CSS or JavaScript to an existing page by clicking Insert, Embed and pasting your snippet into the Embed Code tab, which places your code inside a box on the Google Sites layout.

If you already built a complete webpage or exported a project with its own stylesheet and images, Google Sites has no way to import that file or folder as the site itself. To upload an HTML file or a whole folder so it takes over the full browser window, use a static host like ship.page instead.

Tip: Use Google Sites when you want to build pages visually in a browser and only need to drop in a small widget or embed code.

Why uploading an HTML file to Google Drive no longer works

Many older tutorials tell you to upload your HTML folder to Google Drive and share the link to host a website. Google deprecated the googledrive.com/host feature on August 31, 2015, and shut it down completely on August 31, 2016.

Today, opening a shared .html file in Google Drive shows the raw source code or a document preview rather than a working website. If you need free website hosting for static files or a free teacher website built in HTML, dragging the files into ship.page gives you a working URL in seconds.

Publishing a complete HTML site on ship.page

When you want to turn HTML code into a website without wrapping it inside another platform's template, ship.page serves your static files exactly as you wrote them. It supports HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts, audio, video, WebAssembly and JSON, with no bandwidth limits and unlimited uploads on the free forever plan.

You can publish without an account, or claim your upload with a free account (sign in with Google or an email link, no card) to manage it from a dashboard. If you need pages that stay online as long as you subscribe and can be updated in place without changing the link, Pro is $4 a month (monthly billing, cancel anytime).

  • Free limits: single HTML file up to 10 MB, ZIP up to 25 MB (100 MB unpacked), 100 files per upload, 10 deploys a minute.
  • Folder uploads: a folder goes up as one request of at most 10 MB (roughly 7 MB of files), so zip larger folders first.
  • Pro ($4/month): ZIPs up to 100 MB (400 MB unpacked), 10,000 files, 120 deploys a minute, password protection, and up to 5 custom subdomains like yourname.ship.place.
  • Privacy by default: every uploaded page sends a noindex header so search engines leave it out, and only people with your link can open it.
  • Static rules: file paths are case-sensitive, index.html is the homepage, and there is no server code (no PHP, Node.js, Python, database or WordPress).

Questions

Can I upload an HTML file directly to Google Sites?

No. Google Sites builds pages in its own visual editor and does not let you upload an .html file or a folder of files to publish as a website. You can only paste HTML, CSS or JavaScript snippets into a page using Insert, Embed.

How do I embed custom HTML code in Google Sites?

Open your page in the Google Sites editor, click Insert in the right-hand menu, and select Embed. Switch to the Embed Code tab, paste your HTML, CSS and JavaScript snippet, and click Next and Insert to place the block on your page.

Can I still host an HTML website on Google Drive?

No. Google Drive deprecated its website hosting feature (googledrive.com/host) on August 31, 2015, and shut it down on August 31, 2016. Shared HTML files inside Google Drive no longer open as working webpages.

How can I publish my HTML file for free without creating an account?

Go to ship.page and drag in your .html file, .zip archive or folder, or paste your HTML code. It is free forever with no signup and no credit card, and your page goes live in seconds on its own HTTPS subdomain.

Can I update my HTML page after uploading it to ship.page?

On the free plan, a page cannot be updated in place, so uploading a new version creates a new link. On the $4 a month Pro plan, Pro pages don't expire while you're on Pro and can be updated or re-uploaded without changing the link.
