Update an HTML website and keep the same URL
To update an HTML website and keep the same URL, your host must let you replace the existing files at that address. On ship.page, you can publish an .html file up to 10 MB, a .zip up to 25 MB, or a folder for free with no signup and no account, live in seconds. Free pages get a new link on each upload, while Pro ($4 a month) updates your page at the same URL.
A file. A folder. A fresh start.
Your static site, one link away.
Uploading publishes your file. The link is public but unlisted, not password-protected, so leave out secrets and confidential content.

How to publish and update a site on ship.page
Upload your first version in the browser
Drag your .html file, .zip archive, or website folder onto ship.page, or paste your HTML directly. Your page goes live in seconds on its own subdomain over HTTPS, and you get a downloadable PNG QR code right away.
Claim the page with a free account
You do not need an account to publish. To manage the page from a dashboard, sign in with Google or an email link with no credit card required and claim your upload.
Upgrade to Pro to keep the same URL on updates
On the free plan, a new upload always gets a new link. Upgrade to ship.page Pro for $4 a month (billed monthly, cancel anytime) for in-place updates and custom subdomains like yourname.ship.place.
Re-upload or edit your files in place
From your dashboard, upload your revised HTML file, folder, or ZIP (up to 100 MB, 400 MB unpacked, and 10,000 files) or edit the code directly. Your live link and QR code stay exactly the same.
How static hosts handle updating an HTML website at the same address
| Host | How to update | Same link | Account |
|---|---|---|---|
| ship.page Free | Upload new file, ZIP, or folder | No (new link each upload) | No account needed to publish |
| ship.page Pro ($4/mo) | Re-upload or edit in dashboard or via API | Yes | Account with $4/mo subscription |
| GitHub Pages | Commit changed files to the repository | Yes | GitHub account and public repository |
| Netlify | Drag folder onto Production deploys area | Yes | Netlify account required |
When to use GitHub Pages or Netlify instead
If you need to update a site at the same address for free, GitHub Pages is a strong choice if you do not mind creating an account and managing a repository. It is free for public repositories on GitHub Free, giving you an owner.github.io address (or a custom domain) for sites up to 1 GB, with soft limits of 100 GB bandwidth a month and 10 builds an hour. Keep in mind that GitHub Pages is not allowed as free hosting for a commercial, e-commerce, or SaaS business.
If you prefer dragging and dropping a folder in the browser without using Git, Netlify lets you update a Drop project from your account dashboard. You drag the updated folder onto the Production deploys area of the project dashboard, and the address stays the same. See our Netlify Drop comparison for how the workflow compares.
How ship.page handles free vs. Pro updates
ship.page is built for speed when you want to share a website preview without setting up a repository first. The free plan is free forever with no signup, no ads, and unlimited uploads, taking a single HTML file up to 10 MB or a ZIP up to 25 MB (100 MB unpacked, up to 100 files). Because free pages cannot be updated in place, every new upload generates a fresh URL.
When you already shared a link or printed the PNG QR code and need to fix a typo, ship.page Pro costs $4 a month and lets you replace the files while keeping the exact same URL. Pro pages don't expire while you're on Pro (or you can pick any expiry from 60 seconds), support password protection, remove the closable Hosted on ship.page badge, and include up to 5 custom subdomains like yourname.ship.place that you can point at any of your pages and move anytime.
- Free plan: 10 MB single HTML file, 25 MB ZIP (100 MB unpacked), 100 files, 10 deploys a minute, new link per upload.
- Pro plan ($4/mo): 10 MB single HTML file, 100 MB ZIP (400 MB unpacked), 10,000 files, 120 deploys a minute, keeps the same link.
- Privacy by default: every page sends a noindex header so search engines leave it out, and uploads are never listed publicly.
- Developer tools: publish or update via one curl command (POST https://ship.page/deploy), the MCP server at https://ship.page/mcp, or the GitHub Action.
Tip: Read the drops documentation for details on managing claimed uploads from your dashboard.
Formatting your files so links do not break on re-upload
When you replace a website folder or ZIP at the same URL, keep your file names and folder paths identical so bookmarks to subpages keep working. On ship.page, index.html is always the homepage, and a ZIP with a single top folder is unwrapped automatically.
File paths are case-sensitive, so About.html and about.html are treated as different addresses. A folder with its own index.html opens at /folder/, while a standalone about.html file opens at /about.html (the short /about path only works when your file is saved at about/index.html).
- Static files only: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts, audio, video, WebAssembly, and JSON all work; server code like PHP, Node.js, Python, or WordPress does not.
- Client-side routing: there is no single-page-app fallback and no custom 404 page, so apps with client-side routes should use hash routes like #/about.
- Folder size limit: a raw folder upload goes up as one request of at most 10 MB with the files encoded inside it (roughly 7 MB of files); zip bigger folders before uploading.
- No pre-compression: files are served as they are with no Content-Encoding, so turn off .br or .gz pre-compression in your build tool.
Questions
Can I update a free ship.page link without changing the URL?
No. On the free plan, a page cannot be updated in place, so uploading a revised file gives you a new link. To re-upload or edit a page and keep the same link, you need the Pro plan at $4 a month.
How do I update a GitHub Pages website and keep the same URL?
Commit your changed HTML, CSS, or asset files to the same GitHub repository. GitHub Pages rebuilds the site automatically (up to a soft limit of 10 builds an hour) and updates your live owner.github.io or custom domain address.
How do I update a Netlify Drop site without changing the link?
Open your project dashboard in Netlify and drag the updated website folder onto the Production deploys area. Netlify replaces the live deployment and keeps your existing site address.
Can I move my ship.page URL to a completely different upload?
With ship.page Pro ($4 a month), you can re-upload over an existing page to keep its original random URL, or claim up to 5 custom subdomains like yourname.ship.place. You can point a custom subdomain at any of your pages and move it to another page anytime.
Can I use my own custom domain when I update my HTML site?
ship.page does not offer custom domains on any plan; uploads use their own random subdomain or a Pro yourname.ship.place subdomain. If you need a custom domain, use GitHub Pages.
