How to put your art portfolio online

  1. Export your artwork for the web

Export your paintings, illustrations, or photos at about 2,000 pixels on the long edge as JPEG or WebP. That keeps most files well under 1 MB so your gallery loads fast on phones.

  2. Put index.html and your images in one folder

Save your main page as index.html alongside an images folder. Use the AI prompt on this page if you need a ready-made layout with a gallery, commission price table, and email button. Check that image file names in your HTML match your actual files, because paths are case-sensitive.

  3. Drop the folder or a ZIP into ship.page

Drag your folder into the uploader if it is under roughly 7 MB of files, or zip your folder first for uploads up to 25 MB on the free plan. You do not need an account or a credit card.

  4. Copy the link or download the QR code

Your portfolio goes live in seconds on its own HTTPS subdomain. Copy the URL for your social bio or art school application, or download the PNG QR code from the success screen for printed zines and business cards.

Prompt

Write a complete, single-file index.html for a mobile-first artist portfolio with all CSS and JavaScript inline. Include: 1. Header with artist name [Your Name], tagline [Illustrator & Concept Artist], and a primary mailto button for [you@example.com]. 2. A responsive CSS masonry or multi-column gallery loading images from an images/ folder: [images/piece-1.jpg - "Title One", "Oil on canvas, 2025"], [images/piece-2.jpg - "Title Two", "Digital illustration, 2025"], [images/piece-3.jpg - "Title Three", "Gouache on paper, 2024"]. Add loading="lazy" to every img tag and a simple click-to-zoom lightbox. 3. A Commissions section with a clean HTML price table for [Portrait / $80 / 1 week], [Full body / $140 / 2 weeks], and [Background add-on / +$50 / +3 days], plus a short bullet list for terms of service. 4. An About section with a short bio [2-3 sentences about your work and education]. Use a clean, neutral dark or warm-paper theme with system fonts so the artwork stands out.

Paste this prompt into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, replace the bracketed details with your own pieces and prices, and save the result as index.html.

How big should images be for an online art portfolio?

Exporting photos at about 2,000 pixels on the long edge, saved as JPEG or WebP, keeps most files well under 1 MB. Photos that are already JPEG or WebP barely shrink inside a ZIP, so the total size of your images folder is very close to your final ZIP size.

Adding loading="lazy" to your <img> tags makes the browser load photos further down the page only when the visitor scrolls near them.

How do I send a portfolio link with an art school or job application?

Art school and job applications set their own portfolio rules, including whether they want a link or a PDF, the exact number of pieces, and file size limits, so check each one before you send. When an application asks for a website link, ship.page gives you a page sent with a noindex header, so search engines stay out and only people with your link can view the work.

ship.page does not accept a PDF or image file on its own. If you want to include a printable resume or a PDF portfolio alongside your web gallery, put the PDF inside your folder and link to it from your index.html.

On Pro ($4 a month), you can also lock work in progress behind a password you share only with reviewers.

How do I make a commission info page I can update?

Many illustrators and character artists need a link in bio page that lists commission prices, slot status, turnaround times, and a contact email. Because ship.page hosts static HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with no server code, a mailto: email button or a third-party form service is the simplest way to take requests.

On the free plan, pages cannot be edited in place; uploading a new version creates a new URL. If you pin your commission link in your social profiles and want to keep the same URL every time you open or close slots, Pro is $4 a month and lets you re-upload or edit your page at the exact same address.

Should artists use ship.page, Neocities, or GitHub Pages?

If you just need a live link in a few seconds without creating an account, ship.page is built for that workflow. Other free hosts are a better fit when you want a permanent free home, a built-in community, or a custom domain.

Neocities gives you 1 GB of storage and 200 GB of bandwidth per month for free with no ads, plus a community of personal sites. If you are comparing Neocities alternatives, note that Neocities restricts certain file types on free accounts, while its $5 a month Supporter plan adds 50 GB of storage, 3,000 GB of bandwidth, and custom domains.

GitHub Pages is free for public repositories on GitHub Free, supporting sites up to 1 GB with a 100 GB monthly soft bandwidth limit and custom domains. However, you need a GitHub account and a repository, and GitHub Pages is not allowed as free hosting for a commercial business, which matters if your site is primarily a storefront or commercial commission business.

Questions

How do I make an art portfolio website for free with no signup?

Put an index.html file and your artwork images into a folder or ZIP file and drop it onto ship.page. Without an account, your portfolio is live in seconds on an HTTPS link for 30 days, with support for a ZIP up to 25 MB and up to 100 files.

Can I upload just a PDF or an image without an HTML file?

No. ship.page does not accept a PDF, image, or video file on its own. Put it in a folder or ZIP with an index.html file as the homepage; you can generate one with an AI prompt and link to your PDF from it.

How long will my portfolio link stay online for an art school application?

An anonymous upload stays online for 30 days. If you sign in with Google or an email link for a free account and claim the upload, it stays online for 90 days, and upgrading to Pro for $4 a month keeps the link online with no expiry.

Will search engines index my artwork or will it be listed publicly?

No. Every page uploaded to ship.page is served with a noindex header so search engines leave it out, and ship.page does not list uploads anywhere public. Anyone who has the link can open your portfolio, and Pro users can also add a password.

Why are some of my portfolio images broken after uploading?

File paths on ship.page are case-sensitive, while Windows and macOS often ignore uppercase and lowercase differences on your computer. Check that an image named Piece-1.JPG in your folder is not written as piece-1.jpg inside your index.html.
