How to publish your p5.js sketch

  1. Download your sketch or gather your local folder

In the p5.js web editor, use the Download option to get a .zip file with all your project files plus local copies of the libraries your script tags load. If you code in a local editor, keep your index.html, scripts, and asset files together in one folder or zip them up.

  2. Check that asset paths match file names

File paths on ship.page are case-sensitive, even when your computer ignores case. If your code calls loadImage('Player.png'), make sure the file is not named player.png.

  3. Drop the ZIP or folder onto ship.page

Drag your downloaded .zip file or local sketch folder into the ship.page uploader. You do not need an account or credit card, and if your ZIP has a single top folder it is unwrapped automatically so index.html becomes the homepage.

  4. Share the live link or QR code

Your sketch goes live in seconds on its own HTTPS subdomain. Copy the URL or download the PNG QR code from the success screen to test touch or tilt controls on a phone.

When to use the p5.js editor link vs a downloaded ZIP

If you already have a p5.js web editor account and your sketch is saved there, the built-in Share menu gives you an edit link, an iframe embed, and a fullscreen link at editor.p5js.org/<username>/full/<id>. For quick classroom shares inside the p5.js ecosystem, that built-in link is the fastest path.

You must be logged in to save a sketch and get those links, and your username appears in the URL. When you use the editor's Download option instead, it packages all your project files plus local copies of the libraries loaded by your script tags, so the sketch runs without an external CDN.

Dropping that downloaded file into a ZIP to website tool like ship.page puts the sketch on its own subdomain with no username in the address. It also works when you wrote the sketch locally and never used the web editor at all.

Why loadImage, loadSound, and loadJSON fail when you double-click index.html

When you open a sketch from your computer by double-clicking index.html, the browser uses a file:// address. For security reasons, browsers block JavaScript from fetching local files over file://, so p5.js functions like loadImage, loadSound, and loadJSON fail to load their files.

The p5.js documentation points people to a local web server to fix this during development because those functions must be served over HTTP. Uploading your sketch folder or hosting a ZIP file on ship.page serves every file over HTTPS right away, so your images, audio, fonts, and JSON load in any browser without terminal setup.

Tip: If your sketch folder is larger than roughly 7 MB of files, compress it into a .zip before uploading so it can use the full 25 MB free ZIP limit.

How long does a sketch stay online, and can I keep the same link?

Every upload is served with a noindex header and is never listed in a public directory, so search engines leave it out and anyone with your link can open the sketch. Free pages show a small Hosted on ship.page badge that visitors can close.

If you are submitting a sketch for a class grade or portfolio review and spot a bug after sending the link, the Pro plan lets you replace the files while keeping the exact same URL.

  • Free with no account: 25 MB ZIPs (100 MB unpacked), up to 100 files, online for 30 days.
  • Free account: sign in with Google or an email link to claim your sketch and keep it online for 90 days.
  • Pro ($4/month): links never expire (or pick any expiry from 60 seconds), update your sketch in place, add password protection, upload 100 MB ZIPs with up to 10,000 files, and remove the badge.
  • Team ($19/month): everything in Pro plus a vanity subdomain.

Questions

How do I share a p5.js sketch without the editor bar?

In the p5.js web editor, you can either log in, save the sketch, and copy the fullscreen link (editor.p5js.org/<username>/full/<id>), or download the project as a ZIP and drop it onto ship.page. Uploading the ZIP to ship.page gives you a standalone HTTPS link with no account required.

Why does loadImage or loadSound work in the web editor but fail on my computer?

Sketches that use loadImage, loadSound, or loadJSON must be served over HTTP or HTTPS. Opening index.html directly from your hard drive uses a file:// address, which blocks those files from loading. Uploading your sketch folder or ZIP to ship.page serves it over HTTPS so all assets load properly.

Do I need to change anything in the ZIP downloaded from the p5.js web editor?

No. The editor's Download option gives you a ZIP with index.html, your scripts, your assets, and local copies of the p5.js libraries so it runs without a CDN. You can drag that exact ZIP onto ship.page as is.

How long does a free p5.js link stay online?

A sketch uploaded without an account stays live for 30 days. If you sign in for free with Google or an email link and claim the upload, it stays online for 90 days. Pro ($4 a month) keeps links online permanently.

Can I update my sketch code without changing the link?

On the free tier, pages cannot be edited in place, so uploading a fixed ZIP creates a new URL. On the $4 a month Pro plan, you can re-upload a new ZIP or edit files and keep the same link.
