How to publish your architecture portfolio and PDF

  1. Export a screen-sized PDF and web images

In InDesign, export your booklet using the Adobe PDF preset named [Smallest File Size], which is meant for on-screen viewing and downsamples images to shrink the PDF. For your web page, export key project renders and photos at about 2,000 pixels on the long edge as JPEG or WebP, which keeps most files well under 1 MB.

  2. Put index.html, images and the PDF in one folder

Create a folder containing an index.html file as your homepage, your web images and your PDF file. In your HTML, add a standard link pointing to the PDF filename so reviewers can open the full booklet in their browser's PDF viewer.

  3. Compress the folder into a ZIP file

A raw folder upload goes up as one request of at most 10 MB with the files encoded inside it, which leaves room for roughly 7 MB of files. Because architecture portfolios are usually heavier than 7 MB, compress your folder into a .zip file first (up to 25 MB on free, or 100 MB on Pro and Team).

  4. Drop the ZIP onto ship.page

Drag your .zip file into the browser uploader with no account and no credit card. Your portfolio is live in seconds on its own HTTPS subdomain, and the success screen gives you a downloadable PNG QR code to put on your printed resume or physical boards.

Why can't I upload my architecture portfolio PDF on its own?

ship.page is a static site host, so the browser uploader only takes .html files, .zip files, folders and pasted HTML. A lone PDF, image or video file is rejected, so it has to travel inside a folder or ZIP.

When you put your PDF inside a folder or ZIP file alongside an index.html page, both go live together. A hiring manager clicks your link, scans your best plans and sections on a fast web page, and clicks through to open the full PDF directly in the browser's PDF viewer.

Tip: File paths on ship.page are case-sensitive, so if your file is named Portfolio.pdf, link to Portfolio.pdf and not portfolio.pdf.

How do I fit a heavy architecture portfolio under the size limit?

Architecture student and studio portfolios are often print-ready PDFs that are too big to email. Before you host a ZIP file, separate what goes on the web page from what stays in the booklet.

Note that photos that are already JPEG or WebP barely shrink inside a ZIP, so your ZIP file will be roughly the same size as your folder on disk. Size math matters before you compress the folder.

  • Use InDesign's [Smallest File Size] Adobe PDF preset to downsample images for on-screen viewing.
  • Export web renders and site photos at about 2,000 pixels on the long edge as JPEG or WebP to keep each image well under 1 MB.
  • Zip any folder over roughly 7 MB, since direct folder uploads cap at one 10 MB encoded request on every plan.
  • Keep the total ZIP under 25 MB and 100 files on the free tier, or upgrade to Pro for 100 MB ZIPs (400 MB unpacked) and 10,000 files.

How do I keep my link alive during the hiring season?

When you publish without an account, your free portfolio website stays online for 30 days. If you sign in with Google or an email link to claim the upload, it stays online for 90 days at no cost.

Every uploaded page is sent with a noindex header so search engines leave it out, and ship.page never lists uploads anywhere public. Only the firms and reviewers who have your link can open your portfolio.

A free page cannot be updated in place, so uploading a revised PDF gives you a new link. If you already sent your resume out and need to fix a drawing or swap the PDF without breaking the URL, the $4 a month Pro plan lets you re-upload or edit a page and keep the same link, add password protection for confidential studio work, and keep pages online forever.

Questions

How do I share an architecture portfolio PDF that is too big to email?

Put your PDF in a folder with a simple index.html page, compress the folder into a ZIP file, and drop it onto ship.page. The free tier accepts ZIPs up to 25 MB (100 MB unpacked), and the $4 a month Pro plan accepts ZIPs up to 100 MB (400 MB unpacked). You get a single HTTPS link where reviewers can view your web page and open the PDF in their browser.

Can I upload just a PDF file to ship.page?

No, a lone PDF file is rejected by the browser uploader. You must put the PDF inside a folder or a ZIP file that also contains an index.html file as the homepage.

How do I make my InDesign architecture portfolio smaller?

Export your file using InDesign's [Smallest File Size] Adobe PDF preset. It is built for on-screen viewing and downsamples images to shrink the PDF.

Why did my folder upload fail when my portfolio is under 25 MB?

A direct folder upload is sent as one request of at most 10 MB with the files encoded inside it, which fits roughly 7 MB of actual files on every plan. Compress your folder into a .zip file first so you can use the full 25 MB free limit or the 100 MB Pro limit.

Can I password protect my architecture portfolio or use a vanity subdomain?

Password protection is included on the $4 a month Pro plan, which also removes the closable Hosted on ship.page badge and lets you update your portfolio without changing the link. The $19 a month Team plan includes everything in Pro plus a vanity subdomain, though no plan offers custom domains.

Will search engines index my unlisted studio work?

No. Every uploaded page is served with a noindex header so search engines leave it out, and ship.page does not list uploads anywhere public. Anyone with the link can open it unless you add a password on Pro or Team.
