Deploy an Eleventy (_site) folder to a live link

Drag your built _site folder or a ZIP (up to 25 MB and 100 files) onto ship.page for a free link to your Eleventy (11ty) site, no signup. It goes live over HTTPS in seconds and stays up for 30 days, or 90 days when you claim it with a free account.

How to publish an Eleventy site from your _site folder

  1. Run the Eleventy build command

Open a terminal in your project directory and run npx @11ty/eleventy. By default, Eleventy compiles your templates and writes plain HTML into the ./_site folder.

  2. Check your folder size or zip it

A direct folder upload goes up as one request of at most 10 MB with the files encoded inside it, which fits roughly 7 MB of files. If your _site folder is bigger than that, compress _site into a .zip file (up to 25 MB free, or 100 MB on Pro) using our ZIP to website flow.

  3. Drag _site onto ship.page

Drop the _site folder or your .zip file into the browser uploader. If your ZIP has _site as a single top folder, ship.page unwraps it automatically so _site/index.html becomes your homepage.

  4. Share the live HTTPS link or QR code

Your site is live in seconds on its own subdomain over HTTPS. Copy the URL or download the PNG QR code from the success screen to send a preview to a client or teammate.

How Eleventy source files map to URLs on ship.page

Source fileBuilt toOpens at
index.md_site/index.html/
about.md_site/about/index.html/about/
blog/first-post.md_site/blog/first-post/index.html/blog/first-post/
Page with permalink: /contact.html_site/contact.html/contact.html

Why Eleventy permalinks work out of the box

On ship.page, a page saved as about.html opens at /about.html, not at /about. By default, Eleventy writes index.md to _site/index.html and turns content files like about.md into nested index.html files at _site/about/index.html.

On ship.page, any folder with its own index.html opens at /folder/, so your default Eleventy navigation links work as they are. If you set a custom permalink like permalink: /contact.html in your front matter, Eleventy writes _site/contact.html and the page opens at /contact.html.

Tip: File paths on ship.page are case-sensitive, so match the exact casing of your image, CSS and JavaScript filenames in your templates.

How to share an Eleventy preview with a client

Every uploaded site is served with a noindex HTTP header and is never listed in a public directory. Search engines leave your draft alone, while anyone who has the link can open it right away.

Free links stay online for 30 days with no account, or 90 days if you sign in with Google or an email link to claim the upload. Free pages cannot be updated in place, so uploading a new build creates a new link, and free pages show a small Hosted on ship.page badge that visitors can close.

If you send client revisions often, the $4 a month Pro plan on our pricing page lets you re-upload after a rebuild and keep the same URL, put a password on the site, remove the badge, and upload up to 10,000 files in a 100 MB ZIP (400 MB unpacked). Team is $19 a month and adds a vanity subdomain.

Can I automate deploys or host other static site generators?

Instead of dragging the folder into the browser after every build, developers can publish from a script or CI pipeline. You can deploy with one curl command (POST https://ship.page/deploy), connect the MCP server at https://ship.page/mcp, or run the GitHub Action.

Eleventy outputs plain static assets: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts and JSON all work. Because ship.page does not run server code like Node.js, PHP or Python, any contact form on your site needs a third-party form service.

If you are evaluating other static site generators or documentation tools, read our guides on how to publish a website, free documentation hosting, deploying a Hugo site, or hosting a Jekyll site.

When another host is a better fit than ship.page

ship.page is built for fast previews, client handoffs and lightweight static sites, and no plan offers custom domains. If you need your Eleventy blog or marketing site on your own root domain with git-based builds on every push, Netlify, Cloudflare Pages or GitHub Pages is a better fit.

  • Use ship.page when you want a live preview link from your local _site folder in seconds without connecting a Git repository.
  • Use ship.page Pro ($4 a month) when you want password protection, permanent links that never expire, or up to 120 deploys a minute.
  • Use a git-connected host when you need a custom domain or a fresh build on every git push.

Questions

How do I deploy an Eleventy site for free?

Run npx @11ty/eleventy in your project folder to generate the _site directory, then drag the _site folder (or a ZIP of it) onto ship.page. You get a live HTTPS link in seconds with no signup and no credit card.

Which folder do I upload for an 11ty project?

Upload the _site folder, not your whole project folder. Eleventy compiles your Markdown and templates into plain HTML inside ./_site, and _site/index.html becomes your homepage.

Why did my _site folder upload fail when it is under 25 MB?

Direct folder uploads go up in a single request capped at 10 MB with the files encoded inside it, which holds roughly 7 MB of files on every plan. If your _site folder is larger than 7 MB, compress it into a .zip file first to use the 25 MB free ZIP limit (or 100 MB on Pro and Team).

Can I update my Eleventy site and keep the same URL?

On the free plan, pages cannot be updated in place, so each new upload gets a new link. On the Pro plan ($4 a month) and Team plan ($19 a month), you can re-upload your _site folder or ZIP after a rebuild and keep the exact same link.

Do clean URLs like /about/ work for Eleventy sites on ship.page?

Yes. Eleventy turns about.md into _site/about/index.html by default, and any folder with an index.html file opens at /folder/ on ship.page. If you set a custom permalink like /contact.html, it is written to _site/contact.html and opens at /contact.html.
