How to put a restaurant menu online with a QR code

  1. Generate or write your HTML menu

Use the AI prompt below to create a phone-first index.html file with your dishes, prices and dietary tags. Save the code as index.html on your computer, or copy the HTML to your clipboard.

  2. Drop the file into ship.page

Drag your index.html file, a folder with photos, or a .zip archive into the uploader, or paste your HTML directly. You do not need an account or a credit card.

  3. Download the PNG QR code

Your menu is live in seconds on its own HTTPS subdomain. On the success screen, download the PNG QR code and open the link on your phone to check the text size.

  4. Claim or upgrade before printing table cards

Sign in with Google or an email link to extend a free menu to 90 days for a seasonal pop-up. Before you pay for printed table tents, upgrade to Pro ($4 a month) so your link never expires and future price edits keep the same QR code.

Prompt to generate a mobile HTML restaurant menu

Prompt

Write a complete, single-file index.html for a restaurant menu for [restaurant name, e.g. Cafe Alma]. Put all CSS and JavaScript inline so it works as one file with no external assets. Make it mobile-first with large, readable text and high contrast. Include: a header with the restaurant name and a short tagline; sticky horizontal category tabs ([e.g. Coffee, Breakfast, Sandwiches, Pastries, Drinks]) that scroll smoothly to each section; menu items with dish name, a one-line description, price aligned to the right, and small dietary tags like [V, VG, GF, Spicy]; and a footer with opening hours ([e.g. Tue-Sun 8am-4pm]) and street address ([123 Main St]). Do not use any images so the page loads fast on cellular data.

Paste this into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, replace the bracketed details with your dishes and prices, and upload the HTML it gives you.

How do I update prices without reprinting the QR code?

A QR code is just a drawing of a web address. If the web address changes when you fix a typo or raise the price of a latte, every printed card on your tables still points to the old menu.

On the free tier, pages cannot be edited in place, so uploading a revised HTML file creates a brand-new link and a new QR code. On Pro ($4 a month), you can edit your HTML or re-upload a new file to the exact same link, and the QR codes on your printed table cards open the updated prices.

Use the free 30-day upload to test the menu on a few phones in the dining room. Once the layout is right, check pricing to move to Pro before sending the PNG QR code to your printer.

Tip: Always test your downloaded PNG QR code with your phone camera before printing a full batch of table tents.

Why use an HTML page instead of a PDF or menu app?

Diners scanning a code at a table are looking at a small screen, often on cellular data. A plain HTML menu opens right in the phone's browser with no app to download, and the text wraps to fit any screen size without pinching or zooming.

ship.page does not accept a lone PDF or image file directly. If you prefer to show a PDF or a photo of a paper menu, put it inside a folder or a .zip archive alongside an index.html file that embeds or links to it.

  • Single HTML files can be up to 10 MB on every plan.
  • If you include dish photos, put index.html and your images in a folder (up to roughly 7 MB of files) or a ZIP (up to 25 MB free, 100 MB on Pro).
  • File paths are case-sensitive, so match photo.jpg in your HTML to photo.jpg in your folder.
  • Read the HTML code to website guide if this is your first time saving an index.html file.

What does ship.page not include for restaurants?

ship.page hosts static files only: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images and fonts. That is everything you need for a fast, readable food and drink list, a website QR code for the front window, or a free landing page with your hours and location.

It does not run server code or a database, so online ordering and table payments are not built in. If you want guests to order and pay from their table, you need a separate ordering or payment system.

  • No custom domains on any plan; each menu gets its own subdomain (Team at $19 a month adds a vanity subdomain).
  • Free pages display a small "Hosted on ship.page" badge that guests can close; Pro and Team pages never show the badge.
  • Every upload is served with a noindex header, so search engines will not index your test menus, while anyone scanning the QR code can open it.

Questions

How do I make a digital menu with a QR code for free?

Save your menu as an index.html file (or copy the HTML code), drop it into ship.page with no signup, and download the PNG QR code on the confirmation screen. The link is free and stays online for 30 days without an account, or 90 days if you claim it with a free Google or email sign-in.

Can I change my menu prices without changing the QR code?

Yes, on the Pro plan ($4 a month, billed monthly, cancel anytime). Pro lets you re-upload or edit your menu while keeping the same web address, so the QR codes printed on your tables keep working.

Can I upload a PDF or image of my restaurant menu?

ship.page does not accept a standalone PDF or image file by itself. You can either use an HTML menu (which is easier to read on a phone) or put your PDF or image inside a folder or ZIP file together with a simple index.html page.

Do customers need to download an app to read the menu?

No. Scanning the QR code opens the HTML menu directly in the phone's default web browser over HTTPS, with no app install and no login.

Is there a scan limit or bandwidth cap on busy nights?

No. Bandwidth is not metered on any plan, so guests scanning your QR code during a dinner rush do not use up a traffic allowance.
